This rare mineral pigment from the Ural mountains in Russia was named after Prince Petr Mikhailovich Volkonskoy (1776 - 1852), Minister of the Russian Court, Russia. Over the centuries it was an indispensable part of many icon painters\' pallets and was a favored by Picasso as a unique addition to his colors. The hue is a rare bluish green, which is beautiful in its natural state, but also makes a stunning green shade in oils.
